Interview & Giveaway: Marsha A. Moore

Today, we'd like to welcome author Marsha A. Moore to the blog. Marsha's books are a combination of fantasy and romance, so both Alexia and I have something to look forward to, in them! Marsha has also graciously agreed to giveaway one e-book copy of her Seeking a Scribe: Enchanted Legend One book to a lucky winner. Remember to enter the giveaway at the end of the interview!

So, let's get started!

~~~~~~~~~~
Describe your series? What genre would you classify it into? Is it more romance or more fantasy?
The Enchanted Bookstore Legends are about Lyra McCauley, a woman destined to become one of five strong women in her family who possess unique magical abilities and serve as Scribes in Dragonspeir. The Scribes span a long history, dating from 1200 to present day. Each Scribe is expected to journey through Dragonspeir, both the good and evil factions, then draft a written account. Each book contains magic with vast implications.
Lyra was first introduced to Dragonspeir as a young girl, when she met the high sorcerer, Cullen Drake, through a gift of one of those enchanted books. Using its magic, he escorted her into the parallel world of Dragonspeir. Years later, she lost that volume and forgot the world and Cullen. These legends begin where he finds her again—she is thirty-five, standing in his enchanted bookstore, and Dragonspeir needs her.
When Lyra reopens that enchanted book, she confronts a series of quests where she is expected to save the good Alliance from destruction by the evil Black Dragon. While learning about her role, Lyra and Cullen fall in love. He is 220 years old and kept alive by Dragonspeir magic. Cullen will die if Dragonspeir is taken over by the evil faction…Lyra becomes the Scribe.
The genre is fantasy romance, weighted more toward fantasy since there is a lot of complex adventure.
How do you come up with the idea for the series?
The Enchanted Bookstore Legends are basically a fantasy lover’s dream, being able to step into a favorite book as a character. I know my initial inspiration came after watching the recent Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movie. From that, I wanted to work with parallel worlds and have a heroine who must save the fantasy world from danger. But, I wanted it to be more adult in order to deal with more complex feelings. Beyond that, I just see fantasy stories all around me. It comes naturally.
Create a character for 'The Emerald Dragon' Contest
We had recently interviewed author Solitaire Parke on the blog. Go check out the awesome interview! Today, Solitaire has agreed to hold an amazing giveaway on the blog. I can say that this is the first time I have ever come across such a giveaway, and believe me, I have entered tons of them!
So what is so special about this giveaway? Solitaire is giving two winners a chance to be immortalized by naming one of the characters in his books. This is correct, you get bragging rights to the character and his dragon's names, origins, species, color and more! Wait, there is more! You get a dedication on the series' website and best of all, you get a signed copy of the book when it is released.
Now tell me whether I was right or not? Isn't this the best contest ever?! So what are you waiting for? Put on your thinking hats and get cracking!
“The Emerald Dragon” Character Contest Guidelines:
We suggest reading the current chapters available on Solitaire Parke’s blog to familiarize yourself with the existing characters. Not all of the existing characters come from Earth, so it will give you an idea of the different species and where the story is going. Based on that, to enter the contest, what you would need to comment with is:
  1. Dragon rider Name and Origin – the character you create needs to be a protagonist and/or beneficial to Mount Drago. Definitely no bad guys please. All of the names need to fit within the story criteria, ie. – Nothing too off the wall or crude. As far as origin for the character, I encourage you to have fun with naming the township or province you came from, but again nothing too off the wall or crude please.
    The species that have been listed in the book are as follows:
    • F.B.H. (Full Blood Human) – would come from anywhere on Earth.
    • Drago – ancestors (clans) would have come from Iceland or England.
    • Denizen (Non-Demonic) – would come from the Provinces of Hell.
    • Demon (Male Only) – would come from the Provinces of Hell.
    • Halfling (Half Demoness) – would come from the Provinces of Hell.
    Example – (F.B.H) Elfred MacDugal (Scottsman) and hails from Edinborough, Scotland.
When Readers Speak: Writing a Follow-up Book Series
by Raine Thomas
When I first developed the concept behind my Daughters of Saraqael trilogy, I never considered making it into a series. In truth, knowing what I do now about the young adult market, I might have even considered writing a standalone novel instead of an entire trilogy if I had to do it over again. I’ve read more blogs by readers and reviewers begging for standalones than I ever imagined!
That said, by the time I finished Foretold, the third book in the Daughters of Saraqael trilogy, I found myself writing an unexpected epilogue. In it, one of the secondary characters is about to embark on an adventure…which left me little choice but to write at least one more book. I wasn’t sure what that next book would look like or whether there would be any interest in it, but I released the Daughters of Saraqael trilogy without changing that epilogue.
That was on July 24th, 2011. I think my internal debate about whether to follow my initial impulse and write more books about the Estilorians lasted a total of two days. After that, I already had feedback from my first readers that told me I absolutely had to write more books about the Estilorians.
Enter the Firstborn trilogy.
Writing a follow-up trilogy is astonishingly challenging. After all, the Daughters of Saraqael trilogy came to a rather concrete end. But my readers fell in love with the main characters of Becoming, Central and Foretold, and they’ve asked me time and again whether they’ll get to continue following their stories.
The thing is, the stories of those characters have all been told. Now it’s time for their children to take the stage. This required me to carefully balance incorporating the main characters from the first trilogy with the new characters in the new one. I’ve got to satisfy my existing Estilorian fans while catching the attention of those who haven’t yet read the first trilogy. Since Defy (Book One of the Firstborn Trilogy) releases soon, I suppose I’ll find out soon enough if I succeeded!
Will this be the end of the series of books about the Estilorians? Well, I haven’t yet finished Elder, the third book in the trilogy…so who knows? But like I did with the first trilogy, I’ll let my readers guide me. If they stop asking for more books in the series, I’ll know it’s time to move on.
I’ll leave you with an excerpt from Defy, which releases on April 30th. I hope you’ll check it out and let me know if you’re now an Estilorian fan!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Prologue (Defy: Book One of the Firstborn Trilogy)

The pain was unimaginable. She dragged herself along the ground with her one working arm, at turns scrabbling at tree roots or shrubs and at others digging her hand as deep into the earth as she could manage before hauling her broken body as far as possible. In the past hour, she had moved approximately fifteen feet.

She knew she was going to die. The horrors that had been visited upon her were so atrocious that she couldn’t even think of them now. It was as though a black haze coated her memory.

But her attackers had left her in sight of a platform that could get her to Central. They had no way of knowing it because, being Mercesti, they were unable to see the heavily enchanted travel system. The platform glimmered to her like a taunting beacon, however, bouncing lightly on the waves. If she’d had the required energy left, she would have extended her wings and flown to it.

Animal-like sounds left her throat as she struggled for the strength to move. If she could somehow get to the platform, perhaps someone at Central could help her. And if she was very fortunate, kyria Amber or archigos Gabriel might even be in attendance. They could heal her.

Once more, she stretched her right arm in front of her. The ground onto which she was emerging from the forest was sandy and open. If any of her attackers remained nearby, they would see her. While that thought terrified her, she couldn’t fight the instinct to survive. She knew she had to try. So she pressed her hand into the blazing hot sand until she had enough of a grip to pull herself. Then she strained her already aching bicep and heaved herself forward as much as she could.

She didn’t even move a foot.

Although she thought her attackers had wrought all of the tears from her, she realized now that wasn’t the case. They tracked down her bruised and broken face, joining with her sweat and plopping into the sand beneath her head. Heat radiated from the unforgiving surface beneath her, burning her already punished skin.

A sound to her right had her stiffening in fear. She made a whimpering sound as distinct footfalls grew nearer.

Her enemies must have returned to finish what they started. The tears continued unchecked as she carefully removed her hand from the sand in hopes she could do at least a little damage to the next male who hurt her. She would fight until she couldn’t.

But the being approaching her stopped on her left side. She tried to move her head toward her left and couldn’t. Another pained sound escaped her.

The presence knelt. He said, “Ah, Luvania. What have you gotten yourself into?”

She couldn’t turn her head and her vision was blurred by tears and exhaustion, but recognition was immediate. Although she hadn’t heard that voice in over fifty years, she could identify it. He still managed to sound both impatient with the world and infinitely bored by it. And at the moment, there was a gentleness beneath his tone she would never have expected.

“I am afraid your injuries are beyond my ability to repair,” he said. “I have seen others emerge from the water where you appear to be trying to reach. I can get you to the platform with your assistance.”

She couldn’t find the energy to speak, so made another sound in her throat and moved her head in a form of a nod.

“This will hurt.”

He lifted her. Pain screamed through her body. She squeezed her eyes shut against it. When she again opened her eyes, she realized they were in the water. She must have passed out.

“Thought I might have lost you there,” he said. “Are you ready for placement on the platform?”

Why would he not get on it with her? The thought floated through her head and then faded as insignificant. They had only a couple feet more to go. Extending her right arm toward the platform, she indicated she was ready. He obligingly moved forward. When her hand came into contact with the platform, more tears welled in her eyes. He settled her on it and stepped away.

“Good fortune to you, Luvania,” he said.

She once again thought to ask why he wasn’t accompanying her, but by then she was lifting into the sky.

The trip took an eternity. She lost consciousness more than once. Each time, she saw her rescuer’s face in her mind, though she hadn’t actually glimpsed him during their encounter. Thoughts of him from the past as well as what he had just done for her kept her focused, overriding the brutality she had endured.

She wanted to thank him. Wanted to praise him for giving her hope merely moments after she had given up and decided she was going to die. She wanted to help him as he had helped her. Surely he needed her help if he was living on the mainland and had removed himself from existence for over five decades.

Her delirium grew. Thinking became difficult. But at long last, through vision that was slowly fading to gray, she saw the outline of Central approaching.

She had made it.

The platform eased its way into Central’s loading bay. The darkness of the underground cavern had her blinking to try and focus. It did her no good.

Her brain registered the sounds around her, but couldn’t interpret them. The pain had leeched from her body. She understood then that it had all been for nothing. Her efforts. His efforts. For nothing.

“Holy light!” she heard.

There were other sounds. Other exclamations. People touching her. But she no longer felt anything. She registered only one lingering image.

“Luvania, can you hear me?”

Something flickered in her mind at the echoing voice. Caoilinn.

“Luvania, can you tell us who did this to you?” the Lekwuesti commander asked, her words filled with urgency.

She wanted to tell them. They needed to know. Others would be at risk as she had been. There were dangers beyond any Estilorian’s knowledge lurking on the mainland.

So she struggled to work her strained vocal chords as darkness clouded her mind. There was something important she had to tell them. Wasn’t there?

Then she remembered. The image she had carried with her on the ride to Central. Someone she needed to help.

And with her last breath, she told them.

“Zachariah.”

Short Story - Ice by Terra Harmony

And so the ‘Week of Terra Harmony’ comes to an end…

Day 6 – Short story by Terra Harmony

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Title: Ice
Author’s Introduction: Thank you for your interest in my writing! The following short story is based on some of the main characters from the Akasha Series.  Follow the links posted at the bottom to read the next short story and to check out more awesome book review bloggers!
At first, they had been plentiful.  Tiny specks of concentrated energy – each one of them so dense they could be seen with the naked eye, like specks of dust visible in the sun’s rays.  Shawn collected them, willing them to group together, building a wall around the old man standing across from him.  But now they were fewer, and so transparent they could only be felt, not seen.
They were also no longer cooperating.  Many floated away from the mass, compromising the strength of the wall.  The purpose was to block Cato, the old man, from being able to wield magic.
“Pay attention, son.  Your creation comes from synching yourself with nature.  Shields are not built by sheer willpower.”  Cato lectured the 10 year-old boy, who had been at the exercise for the better part of an hour.  Sweat poured down the boy’s forehead as he furrowed his eyebrows in concentration.  If walls were built with willpower, Cato wouldn’t have a chance.
Cato smiled, forcing air into the flimsy block Shawn had constructed.  Once the air tunnels had penetrated even the smallest pores, he pushed bits of earth through the tunnels with a burst of speed, effectively blowing apart everything Shawn had constructed.
Shawn’s frustrated growl made Cato laugh out loud.  “How did you do that?”  Shawn asked.
“Think of it like overpopulation.  Just as the Earth cannot handle a limitless amount of humans, neither can your wall handle a limitless amount of force.  Now – try again.  This time, concentrate on the purity of your energy.”
Shawn took a sip from his water bottle and threw it aside.  He wiped the sweat off his forehead with his shirt, took a deep breath, and closed his eyes – centering himself just as Cato had taught him.  He drew energy again, attempting to build a wall around Cato’s magical abilities, molecule by molecule.  This time he packed them in tighter, giving his structure a sturdy base.
“Good, good,” Cato commented.  “Soon you will be able to practice with the Gaia herself.  Your manipulation of her magical abilities will include strengthening it, altering it or even blocking it when necessary.”
Shawn fell into a rhythm.  Slowly but surely, the wall was beginning to rise.  It soon became boring, monotonous work.  His thoughts fell to the overpopulation comment Cato made.  “If humans are destroying the planet, because of how many of us there are – why don’t we just make it so there are less of us?”  Shawn asked.
Cato turned a wary eye to the 10 year-old boy, “What do you mean, son?”
“I mean, maybe there should just be less people.”  Shawn continued constructing his wall, brick by brick.
Cato wasn’t sure he should pursue the subject, but he had felt guilty – having spent all his time with the two new children he adopted three weeks ago.  He at least owed it to the boy to treat his ideas with respect; owed him a serious conversation.  “How would you propose we go about doing that?”
Shawn took his time answering.  In the past when he had brought up the subject, he had been either brushed off or rebuked.  “Well, population control, for one.  Like China does.  One kid per family.”
Cato nodded his head, “A valid point.”  Shawn’s wall had completely enclosed Cato from the ground up to his knees.  He could still knock it down, but the boy needed to practice.  “Religion poses a problem.  Many religions preach that faith equals fertility.  Going against such a fundamental belief is not a good idea – even if your original intentions are to save the planet.  Not many will be on your side.  You would alienate our organization from the majority of the population.”
“Religion isn’t all bad – I mean, look at all the wars started because of religious differences.  That got rid of some of the population,” said Shawn.
“You’ve been paying attention in your history lessons!  Good boy!”  Cato ruffled Shawn’s hair, choosing to ignore the darker implications of Shawn’s thought.  Shawn had suddenly picked up speed with his wall – it was now closing over Cato’s chest.
Encouraged, Shawn continued.  “Governments spend so much money on disaster efforts, sick people, old people.  Why don’t they just, you know, stop doing that?  Might help with population numbers.”
“Most certainly.  But then you are telling people to ignore one of the very traits that define humanity – compassion.”  Cato uttered the last word with uncertainty.  He pushed a small amount of energy into the wall.  Impenetrable.  The boy was learning.  Slowly, the wall began closing in; squeezing Cato like a sinister hug.
“But it is compassion, because you are saving the Earth – making it a better place for humans and in the end even saving people,” Shawn said.
Cato tried taking a deep breath, but the squeezing was too intense.  Even though Shawn’s wall was invisible to the naked eye, it was as solid, and as real – as steal.  The boy’s magic, as well as the conversation, were treading dangerous ground.
“Shawn – I think you are missing the point.”  Cato was having more and more difficulty talking as the wall snaked around him.  “The Seven exists to protect and help the Earth.  Those of us that have been blessed with the ability to manipulate elements and energy must do our best to counter the harmful effects of the human population.  We are not here to counter the human population itself.”
“Well, maybe we should.”  Shawn completed the wall; it surrounded Cato like a claustrophobic igloo.  The two stood there, still as ice – one by choice, the other not so much.
Cato was taking in short, constricted breaths, “To what end?  Why then, would we be saving the Earth?  Who would be here to enjoy it?”
Suddenly, the wall disintegrated.  Shawn released his adoptive father and said, “You know – the rest of us.  Whoever is left.”
Cato resisted the urge to brush off of the non-existent wall debris.  “No.  The answer is no.  We will all abide by the mission of the organization – and the mission is not depopulation.”
Completely unnerved by the entire experience, Cato picked up his gym bag and walked away, mumbling excuses of the work awaiting him.
Shawn watched him go.  “Then maybe we need a new organization.”
Elemental powers and dark thoughts; not a good combination – especially with a 10 year old boy! Interested in what kind of man Shawn shapes up to be? Check out the Akasha Series, and follow my blog to get your own dose of magic through my weekly flash fiction posts.
Teaser of 'Air' by Terra Harmony
Day 3 – Reviews of ‘Water’ and teaser of ‘Air’
Feast your eyes peeps… I almost died reading this – I.WANT.THIS.BOOK.NOW! *hint hint, wink wink* J
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I made my way down the path toward the rock and nearly collapsed when I entered the clearing. There, in front of the rock, was a spot where the soil was compressed and indented with a shape similar to a body. Half a dozen rose petals fluttered around the clearing with the morning breeze, drawing attention to the most damning evidence of all; the red cord tied to a root protruding from the ground.
Micah knelt down beside me and untied the cord. “I don’t get it – were you here last night?” As if to answer his own question, he stood and reached inside my nest of matted hair to pull out a rose petal that was buried deep within.
I nodded. “I think so. In person, or…otherwise.” How could I explain it to him?
His hands felt the outline of the body in the soil, then moved down to two much deeper knee marks, “And who else?” His voice suddenly grew tight, weary of my answer.
“Shawn.”
He took up a handful of soil and squeezed until I thought minerals would come out. He stood up in anger. “How? Why?”
Still bent over, with my eyes cast down, I barely whispered, “Look at the cord, Micah. How many blood streaks do you see?” I stayed quiet for a moment, letting realization hit him.
I heard the hesitant footsteps of our three followers enter the clearing. They each looked over Micah’s shoulder at the cord. Susan let out a gasp muffled by her hand over her mouth. Alex gave a very audible, “No way.”
“It is done, then.” Vayu said softly to Micah. “They are bound just as you and she are bound.”
Everyone grew silent but I felt all eyes turn to me. I stood up with my back still to them, not bothering to brush the tainted soil from my knees.
“The hell we are. Give me that cord.” I held out my hand and Micah passed it over. “Now stand back.”
I heard them take a few steps back and knew it wasn’t enough.
No matter, they’ll scatter as soon as they see.
I drew energy that came willingly up through the ground. Almost immediately the wind picked up and clouds blew in at my insistence. I called upon all the elements, infusing moisture into the atmosphere and charging the clouds with electrical energy. Next I used opposite-charged energy to create a conductive path. The first lightning strike hit the cord dead-on, filling the area with a sudden light and a loud crack. My ears rang in protest, but I ignored them. Before the effects of the first bolt wore off, I had another racing to the ground. Those behind me half-jumped, half-stumbled back. I turned my head slightly and smiled; had they not been scared shitless, they would have been proud of me.
My robe came undone. Combined with my cackle and hair rising from the static electricity, I must have seemed an insane witch. I have to admit, I was quite insane in those moments. The cord disintegrated in a matter of seconds, and I set my targets to the impression of my body in the ground. Soil exploded up around me with each lighting strike, then rained down again – offering more and more energy to my cause. The lightening was coming dangerously close to me, but I didn’t particularly care. It fueled my excitement.
“Do something!” Micah shouted over the noise at Vayu and Susan.
Before they could, I delved deep into their centers and retracted their energy. I had no idea I could do that until it was done. Susan actually fainted at the sudden loss of energy. Vayu fell to the ground, paralyzed. Alex moved toward me. I stopped him with a bolt of lightning at his feet. He flew back into the brush. Before Micah could try disarming me with one of his famous kisses, I did the same to him.
Clear of distractions, I concentrated on the annoying little rose petals that still had the nerve to grace the clearing with their presence. The smell of ashes floated through the air. I felt the incredible deposit of energy I had built up draining, and decided to go out with a bang. With just enough to create a powerful final strike, I focused. The lightning paused for a moment while I fueled the force-to-be.
As I finished carving a path of energy and released the charge from the clouds overhead, Micah took me from behind. We went tumbling across the clearing and the strike skewed off to the side in my confusion. It hit the boulder, hard. Pieces of rock shot at us through the air like shrapnel. The world went white.
